Why is it that jesus is nearly always portrayed to be white, yet (in usa anyway) most christians are not white?

Jesus probably wasn't white, so why does the art show otherwise? Why do non white people put up with it? Mostly just curious as to what cultural issues caused this bazaar phenomenon. I'm neither religious, nore "of color".
