Why is magneto so weak in x men movies?

So I've seen all the x men films, 1-3 and first cl. Magneto is my favorite mutant, and in the comics and the animated (not evolution) he has Electromagnetic powers but in the films he's limited to just magnetism. Even on the official first cl website Magneto bio says can make force fields but never once in any of the films he does this. Anyone know why he's portrayed this way?
