Why is buddha now portrayed as human, but did not used to be?

no Buddha was always a human, he was fat because he thought if people rubbed his belly it would bring them good luck, thus spreading peace and fortune to the "known" nations... in fact Buddha never wanted to be worshiped as a God, he was simply a role model of how to live our lives. in my opinion that's were some Buddhist get it wrong.
